This keto chocolate mug cake takes less than 5 minutes to make and cooks up light and tender. It splits into two little mugs, so you can share it or save one for later. With a tender crumb, you get a soft, warm chocolate cake right through the middle. Tip it onto a plate, grab a spoon, and eat it warm. It’s the chocolate fix I keep coming back to.

My kids are my toughest food critics, and they tend to shy away from a lot of my keto adventures.
I knew this keto chocolate mug cake was a keeper when my daughter took a bite and said it tasted like the mug cakes she used to make. The flour-and-sugar kind.
Then she came back the next day and ate the second one. (I wasn't happy when I went to look for it.) And she has done that every time I have made it since.
This means something to me, because a keto mug cake is tricky. You have an egg and a small amount of batter, and the egg turns bouncy and makes the whole thing taste a little eggy.
This chocolate almond flour mug cake stays soft, tender, and light. It came together so cleanly I could tip them out onto a plate.
A couple of small things I discovered in testing make this work. Let me walk you through them.

Why This Almond Flour Chocolate Mug Cake Works
I initially attempted to just rely on cocoa powder for the chocolate to keep things simple. I found that adding melted chocolate chips made it richer, and the crumb stayed more tender. Adding the heavy cream added a little softness that you sometimes miss in regular low carb almond flour cake.
The other big thing I learned is that stretching one egg across two mugs meant less of that spongy, omelet-y thing so many keto mug cakes suffer from. This makes this almond flour mug cake taste like real cake.
The instant espresso? Totally optional. It makes the chocolate taste even more chocolatey. If you don’t have it, just leave it out. It is still delicious.
Judging Doneness
We only cook for 45 seconds before you check for doneness. The top should be set, but still moist. Almost, but not quite done. If it looks completely done when you pull it out, you’ve actually gone a little too far.
Every microwave runs a little different, so you'll need to judge for yourself.
Don't skip the 2-minute rest. This is when it firms to a tip-on-a-plate texture.
A Quick Word on Sweetener
Allulose is my sweetener of choice for this sugar-free chocolate mug cake.
I like it because it stays soft and moist as the cake cools. It also skips the cooling that some keto sweeteners like erythritol leave on your tongue.
One thing to know about allulose is that it is less sweet than sugar. If you want your cake a little sweeter, you can add another half tablespoon of sweetener.
Let’s Talk Ingredients
Use super-fine almond flour, not almond meal. Meal is coarser, and it gives you a grainy, sandy crumb. This is the best I've found at a good price. You cannot sub in coconut flour as it doesn't behave the same way.
Grab sugar-free chocolate chips you like because the flavor really shows up. Lily's and ChocZero are my favorite brands.
The instant espresso is optional, but it is the cheapest upgrade here. An eighth of a teaspoon. No coffee flavor, just deeper chocolate.
How I like to serve it
This keto chocolate mug cake is great as is and doesn't need anything else. But if you want to elevate it, a spoonful of keto whipped cream or keto vanilla ice cream is great.

Keto Chocolate Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon sugar-free chocolate chips plus more for topping
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup super-fine almond flour
- 3 tablespoons allulose
- 1 ½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon instant espresso powder optional
Instructions
- Melt the butter and chocolate chips in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring in between. If they aren’t fully melted after the first minute, reduce the bursts to 15 seconds to prevent burning.
- Whisk in the egg, cream, and vanilla until smooth.
- Add the almond flour, allulose, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder. Stir just until no streaks remain.
- Divide between two 6 oz mugs or ramekins that have been sprayed with cooking spray. Top with chocolate chips if desired.
- Microwave one at a time, 45–55 seconds each. Start at 45 and check — the top should look set but still slightly moist.
- Rest 1–2 minutes before eating.
